Unknown is a condition

The descendants do not inherit a finished world. They inherit a method: observe, document, test, survive, return, contribute.

Alexandria learns to say it does not know

The Library has become a university. Alexandria is the same living system across the stacks, the starships, and the field interfaces. Four years of training precede authorization to leave the map. Haven itself is still incompletely mapped. A field report can be the first record of a species.

Folklore is unverified data, not an automatic dismissal and not an automatic belief. Mox is dangerous to Greg’s blood pressure because she treats a horror story as a hypothesis.

Hannah — They say it goes after girls dressed in red.

Mox — I’m fine. I wear orange.

Hannah — It’s a horror story, not a contract.

Mox

She was born Molly, to Allie and Nick. When she is about one, they leave her with Greg for what should have been a short trip. He sees the ship pulled into an anomaly. They vanish. He raises her. He cannot comfortably give her Molly’s name after the original Molly’s death, so she is Mox. She calls him Dad because that is what the house already calls him, and because he is.

Her first disaster is also a discovery: an unmapped barrier, a rock-spiked bear, District Four, and the being she names Silver. Silver is predominantly red when found. The name is Mox’s anyway. Names in this generation often begin casually and later enter the record.

The anomaly’s exact mechanics are open. What is known is relational. Silver moves to defend Mox from the creature called Red and cannot attack. Greg steps between them. Blue, home, Greg — the recognition cue helps Allie reconnect. Red and blue become purple. Allie and Nick return to their daughter. Their old bodies do not.

The black veil

Earlier, Theo is on his first field study as a teacher. Evelyn is with him. They find an onyx-black object Alexandria cannot match. Theo tells the students to keep their distance. Evelyn takes off a glove.

Theo — Evelyn, we don’t know what it is.

Evelyn — But it’s living.

The veil glows amber. Two heartbeats, not one. It opens. Lee, pale, takes Evelyn’s finger. Jay, dark, reaches for Lee. That is their relationship before either of them has a word.

Queen Hex produced that veil under terrible pressure and rejected it because it was black, which her culture does not treat as harmless variation. A handmaiden ejected it into open space. Hex never sees the twins. She spends the rest of her life believing she failed to produce an heir.

Saydie comes from that culture and is not a problem for the boys to solve. Both twins become attached. The story leaves the romantic structure unresolved on purpose. When they return, Hex has to face what she threw away. Nature, nurture, and choice stay separate questions.
