I’m staying
A six-year-old calls a feared authority Grandpa. She does not defeat him in debate. She keeps inviting him into ordinary belonging until the office cannot stay what it was.
What the punishment became
Alexysaer is forbidden to use severance as an escape. He remains emotionally exposed to the people he judges. Punishment becomes occupation, occupation becomes identity, and the civilization grows dependent on one permanently suffering person.
His defining fear is not punishment. It is silence: becoming someone who can stop feeling consequence and still act.
He is more than twelve thousand years old. Unresolved burden has kept his life from completing. For Haven-native life, death is not only a clock. A life has to be able to finish and release.
The coronation
He spends years teaching Athena politics, law, history, and the Witness system. When there are no lessons left, the coronation is also her graduation. Their hands touch. Centuries move into her. Her knees buckle. He tries to pull away.
I’m staying.
Greg reaches her first. Molly holds Greg. Theo and Atticus join. Little Alexandra adds her hand. The burden circulates. No one person becomes the new container. Alexysaer can feel love again, complete his life, and return as resonance and starlight.
Athena’s solution is never superior pain tolerance. She proves the office was designed around the wrong assumption. She later restructures or abolishes it from the inside.
